Why do you need to rent a car in Tenerife?
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, with an area of 2,034 km2 and a population of 933,402 inhabitants. Tenerife has a population density of 441.75 inhabitants / km2 and a height of 3,718 meters from sea level. Although Tenerife has a first world network of buses and public transport, there is nothing like having the freedom of being able to move around on your own with your own rental vehicle.
Our Car Rental in Tenerife will give you the freedom to move around the island as you please, avoiding public and tourist buses. You will be able to move around the best corners of the island of Tenerife and especially its magnificent beaches such as El Médano, Bahía de El Duque, La Caleta, Los Cristianos, Las Américas, El Conquistador, Taganana, Benijos and even the most famous beaches in the north such as El Socorro, El Bollullo, Los Patos, El Ancón or the Playa Jardín of Puerto de la Cruz.
About Tenerife, the Continent Island
If you rent a car in Tenerife you can explore all its corners with freedom. Tenerife has two World Heritage Sites: El Teide Natural Park and the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. But the island itself should be totally protected because you will discover that it is a mystical and complete island that enjoys 8 different microclimates. You will discover that you can go from the top of the snowy El Teide to the nearest beach in just 40 minutes, something that few islands in the world can offer.
The capital of Tenerife is Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with a population of 204,856 inhabitants. The capital was built in the old port of the historic city of La Laguna, which is currently located next to the capital, adjacent to it, as if it were the same city, with a population of 155,549 inhabitants, so you can check that only 1/3 of the total population is between the capital of the island and La Laguna, leaving 2/3 of the population distributed throughout the rest of the island, both north and south.
What to see in the North of Tenerife?
As you may know, the north of Tenerife is the greenest part of the island. The reality is that the north of Tenerife is nothing like the south. In the north of Tenerife you can enjoy a humid climate, with a winter of sunny days and cold nights for a subtropical island. Although the thermal sensation is cold, the temperature in the north of Tenerife in winter does not usually drop below 15 degrees.
In the north of Tenerife you will discover wonderful towns, cities and corners with incredible views of Teide or the sea such as Puerto de la Cruz, El Sauzal, Tacoronte, Santa Úrsula, La Laguna, Los Realejos and above all what is called here Isla Baja, where the highway does not reach, where you can enjoy wonders such as Garachico, Buena Vista and Punta de Teno, the bridge between north and south where you can even contemplate the different tides from the south and north. Apart from this, of course, you can see El Teide and the Las Cañadas area, a natural monument without rival.
What to see in the South of Tenerife?
The South of Tenerife was designed for the enjoyment of tourists. It is an area of desert and badlands on which hotels have been built for all tastes and budgets. Enjoy the beaches of La Caleta, El Duque, Las Américas, Los Cristianos, El Médano and even visit the towns of Vilaflor, Granadilla de Abona, Adeje Alto and Guía de Isora to enjoy the island as it should be, seeing everything that can offer, because it has something for all tastes and palates, and speaking of palates, let’s move on to the gastronomy of Tenerife.
Gastronomy in Tenerife
Some will be surprised to discover that Tenerife has 6 Michelin stars. Two of them are in the M.B (Martín Berasategui of the Ritz Carlton Abama) and the others are distributed in the following restaurants: NUB (La Laguna), El Rincón de Juan Carlos (Los Gigantes), Abama Kabuki (Ritz Carlton Abama) and Kazan from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a mixture of Japanese and Canarian-Galician cuisine. However, for other types of pockets, not necessarily less demanding, Tenerife has a whole network of local restaurants called Guachinches.
The original Guachinches are only open during the wine harvest season. They are very familiar places where you can eat typical Canarian dishes such as ropa vieja, escaldón, fiesta meat, chickpeas, grilled cheese with green or red mojo, etc. Most of the Guachinches are found in the north of Tenerife, especially between Santa Úrsula and Tacoronte and you can see a whole list of them with ratings on mobile applications like GuachApp.

More info about Tenerife
Tenerife is a rugged island where the highest peak in Spain is located. For this reason, renting a car in Tenerife will give you the necessary freedom to move around the island comfortably. At Atlas Car Rental Tenerife we have the best and most comfortable vehicles on the market, among which are the Renault Clio IV, Ford Tourneo, Nissan Primastar, Fiat Panda, Nissan Micra, Dacia Sandero, Seat Córdoba, Seat León, Nissan Notte, Citroen Jumpy, Mercedes B-Class and a stupendous Renault Megane convertible.
Tenerife has two airports, locally called North Airport and South Airport, but in reality they are called Tenerife North Airport (Formerly known as Los Rodeos Airport located in the old capital of Tenerife known as La Laguna) and Tenerife International Airport. Reina Sofía: which is the current name of the airport in the South of Tenerife.
Atlas Rent a Car Tenerife can offer you your selected vehicle both at the North and South Airports, but in addition, Atlas Car Hire has offices in Playa Paraíso, Las Américas, Adeje, Playa de La Arena and Los Gigantes, all of these municipalities or towns in the South of Tenerife, where more tourism arrives as the best hotels, beaches and temperature are found.
However, renting a car in Tenerife to stay in the south of the island is a mistake. We recommend our clients to visit the entire island of Tenerife, as it offers some spectacular contrasts: The North is very green and colder, while the South is a desert with good beaches and a plethora of hotels of all levels, from 2-star pensions to Grand Luxury hotels and Michelin stars. Tenerife has 6 Michelin stars to enjoy great cuisine, but it also offers more than 15 5-star hotels, of which, depending on the year, more than 5 are 5-star Grand Luxury.
If this were not enough, we recommend renting a car in Tenerife from any of our rent a car because the local gastronomy of the north of Tenerife is a luxury in itself, and not precisely because of its price. The famous guachinches, semi-local restaurants that in theory can only open when they have a wine harvest, offer a personalized menu according to the season and eat a lot at a very good price, something that does not happen in the rest of the islands.
When renting your favorite car in our Rent a Car in Tenerife, you will see that moving around the island by car is very easy, since the island has two highways that connect the north and south of the island surrounding Tenerife along its coast. In addition, a new highway has recently been added, locally called the ring road, which will allow you to save time if you want to move from Isla Baja (San Juan de La Rambla to Punta de Teno, passing through Buenavista) to the municipality of Los Gigantes, in the south of the island. It is an opportunity to see the true mountain of Tenerife, beyond Teide, which is another must-see.
As far as the capital of Tenerife is concerned, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is also a must-see. Being a coastal city, it has a lot of charm, but we recommend not entering or leaving Santa Cruz at rush hour, especially avoiding driving between 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. La Laguna, its former capital, is a must-see and if you rent your car at the North Airport, know that this city is right next to you, and you may be able to visit it before checking-in at your hotel.
